The history of E-Z block
E-Z Block Systems, Inc. began with a goal; to create a new building block that would be able to break into the competitive construction market. In order to accomplish this we knew that certain criteria would have to be met. So, before we even began, we sat down and determined what our block needed to be.
First, it had to be cheap. Any block we made would have to be competitive with wood frame construction. We weren't interested in trying to convince customers to spend more money for a product that was better. We wanted to offer savings and a superior product. We wanted the choice to be easy.
Also, it had to be compliant with local. National and International building codes. In theory, any construction method should be allowed to be used once an engineer or architect gives his stamp of approval on the plans. However, not all building inspectors share this viewpoint. And even if they did, having each building engineered was an added cost to our customers that we weren't willing to accept. So we determined to get specific recognition of our product, with an accompanying registration and identification number, from the International Code Council.
Finally, it had to be grounded in common sense. Something intuitive, something simple.
So we began. We wanted an ICF, but expanded polystyrene bead blocks were simply too expensive when amortizing a manufacturing plant as part of its cost. So we created an ICF out of a different material: cellular concrete which is primarily Portland Cement and entrapped air. After much research, we discovered a way to stabilize and harden super-light density cellular concrete. We experimented with and modified the material until it exceeded our shear, tensile and compression goals. Our breakthrough in strengths of materials have been confirmed by testing from Independent Laboratory Review (results are available upon personal request). We designed the block to be compliant with ICC code and undertook the considerable expense of obtaining an ICC number.
We have a manufacturing plant in Southern Utah, and are currently operating a successful business. We have proved that it does not take millions of dollars to break into the lucrative ICF business with actual historical results as a small company. Better insulated homes are the future.
The future of E-Z Block
In addition to growing our company in Southern Utah, we are also looking to expand. We believe that E-Z blocks are a unique new product that needs to be an available option wherever people are building. To this end we are currently looking for potential licensees or business partners. Visit our "Licensing" page to learn more.
